Ncat 7.92 Fixes for Missing SSH Banners over SOCKS
Identify the helper ProxyCommand actually runs before changing the SSH server or compiling an unreleased build.
An early Git-over-SSH failure can belong to its Ncat SOCKS helper. Nmap 7.92 recorded two relevant fixes:
| Failure | Released fix context |
|---|---|
| Server data/banner dropped just after SOCKS setup | Fixed in 7.92 |
| Proxy-created TCP connection closes immediately | Bug in 7.90/7.91 fixed in 7.92 |
Find the executable selected by ProxyCommand, then inspect that helper:
ncat --versionA new binary in PATH does not replace an absolute path in SSH configuration. Compare the actual configured path with this report.
These fixes explain specific early transport faults. Once negotiation completes, SSH account rejection belongs to the later exchange. An old recommendation to compile master is unnecessary merely to obtain released 7.92 fixes.
