Git's http.proxy setting is a proxy address, not an on/off Boolean. Assigning 0 gives the transport a value to interpret as an endpoint. It does not request “no proxy.”

For one Git HTTP operation that should deliberately connect directly, Git documents an empty proxy override:

git -c http.proxy= ls-remote https://git.example/project.git

The repository URL is illustrative. The -c assignment belongs to that invocation. Use a direct route only where that is the intended network policy.

For a persistent repair, identify the source of the unwanted value. Git can merge system, user and repository configuration, and http proxy settings can be URL-specific. Removing one global value does not remove a repository override or a proxy inherited from the environment.

Unsetting a configuration key allows another applicable input to take effect. Giving it the documented empty value explicitly disables proxying for that setting. Choose according to whether the repository should inherit the normal route or keep a deliberate direct override.
