Why a Proxy IP Shows Different Countries on Different Sites
Country labels come from geolocation data. Compare the same exit address before deciding that a proxy is in the wrong country.
You select a proxy marked Germany, then an IP-check page reports the Netherlands. Before changing the proxy, check whether both results refer to the same IP address. The address you connect to and the address used for the proxy's outbound request do not have to be identical.
Compare the actual exit address
Write down the endpoint from the list and the address reported by the destination. If they differ, looking up the endpoint in another geolocation database will not resolve the discrepancy: you are comparing two addresses.
curl's remote_ip field normally identifies its connection peer. In a proxied request, that can be the proxy listener. Use a destination-side IP response or your own server's connection logs to observe the exit address.
The same address can have different labels
IP geolocation is a database estimate, not a location measurement made by your browser. Data providers can have different information about a network, update their records at different times, and assign different levels of detail. A country result is generally a different kind of claim from a city result.
MaxMind's accuracy documentation explains that network type affects precision and that IP geolocation cannot identify a household or street address. Its location for a proxy or VPN service also does not identify the person using that service. A country label on a free proxy list should be treated as a useful filter, not proof of a machine's exact physical location.
A website's country choice may use more than IP
A country selector or language on a shopping or search page is not necessarily an IP geolocation report. The site may use account settings, a saved cookie, browser language, or a previously chosen region. If you want to compare geolocation, use a result that explicitly reports the queried IP and its location.
If the reported exit address changes between requests, record each result separately. A different country response can be caused by a different exit rather than a database disagreement about one address.
A useful record for a disputed location
- The proxy endpoint and protocol.
- The exit address reported for the request.
- The service that assigned the country.
- The time of the request and, when available, the database version.
For a task that depends on a specific region, test the actual destination after confirming the exit address. An IP-check page reporting the desired country does not guarantee that every other site will classify it the same way.
