For the documented libtorrent 2.1 settings interface, configure the session with a settings_pack rather than combining several historical set_proxy methods.

SettingPurpose
proxy_typeSelect a supported proxy protocol
proxy_hostname, proxy_portSelect the intermediary
proxy_username, proxy_passwordSupply its account when required
proxy_peer_connectionsRoute peer payload connections, including web seeds
proxy_tracker_connectionsRoute tracker connections
proxy_hostnamesResolve destination names through a supported proxy

Fill the pack and apply it through the session's apply_settings interface. For hostname proxying, the reference documents support with SOCKS5 and HTTP. Check the selected protocol against the traffic needed by the application. When choosing a public SOCKS5 endpoint, use the SOCKS5 proxy list as a starting point, then establish which peer and tracker connections that endpoint actually permits.

The old force_proxy advice is version-specific. The project's 1.2 changelog deprecated that setting because a configured proxy is always used for the covered traffic. Its presence in an old binding example does not establish a current requirement.

Monitor connection and tracker failures through the application's alert handling. Review peer, tracker and DNS behavior separately; a successful tracker response alone is not a result for the peer payload route.
