Toxiproxy forwards a TCP stream to a configured upstream and can impair that stream. Its HTTP control API does not make the traffic listener an HTTP forward proxy.

For an SDK configured to use an HTTP proxy, an existing forward proxy can sit behind it:

SDK → Toxiproxy 127.0.0.1:7890 → HTTP proxy 127.0.0.1:8888 → S3:443

Configure the Toxiproxy listener on 7890 with 127.0.0.1:8888 as its upstream. Point the SDK’s HTTP proxy setting at http://127.0.0.1:7890. The listener relays the SDK’s CONNECT request; the HTTP proxy interprets CONNECT and opens the destination tunnel.

These loopback addresses assume all three local components share a network namespace. Containerized components need addresses reachable from their own namespaces.

This arrangement changes the client-to-forward-proxy path. It does not replace destination TLS or service authentication. When assessing an injected fault, account for the SDK’s retries separately: a recovered operation can hide an earlier failed attempt.
