npm ping --registry=https://registry.npmjs.org/

Use the project's intended registry. npm ping contacts that registry and verifies authentication through the current configuration. Successful completion matters; an old example's empty-object output is not a required format.

Run it where the failure occurs. An IDE-launched npm process can have different environment or configuration inputs from a terminal.

Read the result at the right stage

If ping fails, retain the first error. Proxy resolution, connecting to the listener, a 407 challenge and registry authentication rejection are different stages.

If ping succeeds but installation fails, keep the later download URL with its error. An archive can live on another host, and a lifecycle script can download a separate executable. Cypress, for example, documents its own proxy and binary-download behavior; registry ping does not perform that transfer.

When the question is whether traffic crossed the proxy at all, pair the registry response with proxy records or another route observation. The response alone establishes reachability and authentication, not the exact path.
