If login succeeds but the group rule denies the request, follow the identity into the LDAP lookup before changing the password. Authentication, finding the user object and matching group membership are three separate results.

  1. Record the authenticated name: it may be DOMAIN\alex, [email protected] or alex.
  2. Check the value passed through the external ACL's %LOGIN and the user attribute the helper searches.
  3. Compare an authorized and an unauthorized fixture identity: what lookup name resulted, was the user found and did membership match?

For ext_ldap_group_acl, documented -S removes an NT-style domain component and -K removes an @-separated Kerberos realm component. Use either only when that transformation matches the directory contract. If two authoritative domains contain the same short name, stripping the qualifier can select the wrong identity.

Keep the helper's filter substitutions straight as well. User-search and group-search filters have different placeholders; a filter copied from another helper or release can search for the wrong value even when LDAP connectivity works.

Find the first result that differs from policy and repair that mapping or search. Keep bind secrets and user passwords out of the comparison. A group lookup failure after a valid login does not call for changing the browser's authentication scheme.
