Read the failed source URL before changing Cargo's proxy. Registry metadata, a crate archive and a Git dependency can use different fetching and authentication paths. An SSH Git URL also needs a different transport arrangement from HTTPS.

For Cargo's relevant HTTP requests, the route can be set with:

[http]
proxy = "http://203.0.113.10:8080"

Replace the documentation endpoint with your HTTP proxy. For a public registry path allowed to use public proxies, candidates are in the HTTP proxy list. This does not establish that an external Git executable received the same configuration.

If the failing source is Git, Cargo can select the Git CLI instead of its built-in implementation:

[net]
git-fetch-with-cli = true

CARGO_NET_GIT_FETCH_WITH_CLI=true selects it for one command. The external Git now needs its own proxy configuration and credentials. Compare the same Git URL under the same launch environment; a working unrelated terminal repository is not the test.

A missing revision, repository permission denial or SSH host-key error remains that problem after switching implementations. The option is a way to choose a supported client, not a general dependency repair.

Keep diagnosis at project or command scope: global Git and user Cargo settings can affect unrelated workspaces. A registry URL selects package data, not an intermediary. After the Git path works, rerun the complete intended Cargo operation because archives, redirects and build-time downloads can still introduce other routes.
