Chrome Data Saver Proxy Recipes Describe a Retired Service
Recognize the retired Data Saver and Lite mode service before attempting to recreate its historical Firefox integration.
Old Firefox instructions using proxy.googlezip.net and a generated Chrome-Proxy header belong to Google’s former Data Saver compression service.
Google announced that Lite mode, the Android feature formerly called Chrome Data Saver, would be turned off on March 29, 2022 with Chrome 100. Recreating an old header algorithm or installing a historical extension does not make that retired service a supported proxy endpoint.
For a current deployment, choose a maintained proxy service whose operator documents its endpoint, supported clients and authentication. For a permitted public HTTP test, the HTTP proxy list offers endpoint candidates without promising the retired service’s compression features. If the actual requirement is reduced download volume, evaluate that capability separately: an ordinary forward proxy need not compress content, and an opaque HTTPS tunnel cannot rewrite the encrypted response body.
