client → local TCP relay → existing forward proxy → destination

In this arrangement, the relay has one fixed upstream. It passes the client's request unchanged to the existing forward proxy. That proxy reads the absolute URL or CONNECT target, applies policy and opens the destination connection.

Pointing the relay directly at a website changes the contract. A forward proxy must select destinations and handle HTTP framing and connection behavior; extracting a hostname from the first line is insufficient.

Nmap's Ncat separately provides an HTTP-aware listen mode:

ncat --listen 127.0.0.1 3128 --proxy-type http

This loopback example uses Ncat's proxy implementation, not a feature shared by every nc. Its listen-side proxy handles HTTP methods and CONNECT. Its client-side SOCKS options do not establish a SOCKS server in listen mode. A persistent shared service also needs deliberate connection handling, access control and logging.

For observation, locate the encryption boundary. A relay on a plain HTTP proxy connection can see proxy requests and replies. After CONNECT, destination HTTPS is TLS bytes, not readable page content. TLS to the proxy hides even the initial proxy exchange on that link. Use client/proxy diagnostics for interpreted transactions, and protect logs that can contain credentials or sensitive URLs.
