Bower Proxy Failures: Registry Downloads vs. Git Checkouts
Locate the HTTP lookup, archive download or Git transport behind a Bower operation before choosing its proxy configuration.
Read the existing Bower operation with its --verbose diagnostics. Keep the last registry/archive URL or Git command with the first error; successful name resolution can precede a failure in another client.
Bower → HTTP registry lookup or archive download
Bower → Git process → repository transport
| Failed operation | Proxy input to inspect |
|---|---|
| Bower registry or HTTP archive | Bower proxy/https-proxy settings and effective environment |
| Git HTTP/HTTPS | Git http.proxy and HTTP transport environment |
| Native git:// | core.gitProxy or GIT_PROXY_COMMAND |
| SSH, including git@host:path | SSH routing such as the approved ProxyCommand or ProxyJump |
Bower's GitRemoteResolver invokes Git. Its GitHub resolver can first fetch an HTTPS archive and fall back to Git, so a recognizable GitHub package name does not identify which route failed.
Where a repository offers an approved HTTPS endpoint, choosing it lets Git use HTTP transport. Confirm it exists rather than applying a blanket global plain-HTTP rewrite. For that public HTTPS Git source, a proxy address from the HTTP proxy list is an option when public routes are permitted and the actual Git process has no configured or retained proxy credentials.
Compare Git under the same account and launch environment as Bower. Preserve resolver, scheme and operation together; another terminal's success or a registry-address change cannot supply the missing subprocess route.
