A proxy URL that works in an HTTP library may fail when copied directly into Selenium's browser proxy capability. The capability has a defined format, and configuring an address is only one part of using an authenticated proxy.

The WebDriver specification defines fields such as httpProxy and sslProxy as a host with an optional port. They are not a general-purpose place for a username:password@host URL.

Identify which login is involved

  • The browser can need credentials for the outgoing proxy.
  • The destination website can have its own login.
  • A remote WebDriver service can authenticate the test runner.

Credentials for one connection do not automatically apply to the others. Adding a username to the remote WebDriver URL, for example, does not establish that browser traffic can authenticate to the outgoing proxy.

An HTTP 407 response identifies a proxy challenge. Record the advertised authentication method and check support in the browser and automation interface you are using.

Choose a supported authentication route

Depending on the environment, that may be a browser-supported authentication integration, an approved extension, or an authorized local proxy that handles the upstream login. Each has different deployment and credential-storage requirements. Use current browser documentation rather than downgrading Selenium to recover an old authentication-dialog method.

Treat the proxy capability as new-session configuration, keeping the endpoint format unambiguous. Then handle authentication through the chosen integration. Do not disable certificate verification to solve a 407; that changes a different part of the connection and leaves the login problem unresolved.
