Squid provides separate operations for validating and applying configuration:

  • -k parse checks syntax.
  • -k reconfigure asks a running instance to reread configuration.
  • A service restart stops and starts the proxy process.

File, instance, and setting

Identify the binary, configuration path, and service instance involved. With custom paths or several instances, a valid syntax check can concern another file.

Consult the installed release's documentation for the setting being changed. Listener, process, and startup options need not share the same reconfiguration behavior.

After requesting reconfiguration, inspect service state and logs for acceptance. A parser result establishes syntax, while those observations show what the running service did. For access-policy changes, check permitted and denied requests against a controlled destination too.

If a restart is required, plan for active connections and background jobs, including how applications recover interrupted operations. Repeated restarts cannot repair invalid configuration or unavailable files.
