For a Squid 7 file access log using the built-in squid format:

access_log daemon:/var/log/squid/access.log logformat=squid

Choose a path usable by the logging arrangement. For an open-file permission error, inspect the path and actual writer’s access. The daemon module sends records to a logging helper; stdio writes directly through Squid's file handling.

logformat=squid selects the fields, independently of the filename. It is also the documented default, so omitting the name does not by itself explain an empty log. A custom name must refer to a defined logformat.

Older examples put a bare format name after the path. The Squid 7 reference recommends the explicit option spelling above.

Missing transactions

ACL names after the output options filter records for that destination: all listed conditions must match. Without an ACL filter, the rule records all requests eligible for that destination. Inspect the other logging rules and filters when only some traffic is missing.

Entries normally describe completed transactions. An open CONNECT tunnel can still be carrying traffic before its final record appears.

This interface is listed for Squid 7 and marked unavailable in Squid 8. Use the logging configuration documented for the deployed release.
