For Lynx launched from a POSIX shell, set the proxy URLs in that shell:

export http_proxy=http://proxy.example:8080
export https_proxy=http://proxy.example:8080
lynx https://example.com/

The variables select HTTP and HTTPS destinations respectively. Both can point to the same HTTP proxy endpoint. For allowed public browsing with no proxy account, the HTTP proxy list supplies addresses for those URLs.

The equivalent entries in an applicable lynx.cfg are:

http_proxy:http://proxy.example:8080
https_proxy:http://proxy.example:8080

Lynx configuration uses a colon between the name and value, without spaces around that separator. The configuration-file path depends on the installation; an explicit -cfg argument or LYNX_CFG environment value can select another file.

Check inherited environment variables if a file change appears ineffective, because the proxy environment can override the file’s value. HTTPS access also requires a Lynx build with appropriate TLS support; the proxy address cannot supply a missing TLS implementation.
