The error “You must specify --ssl to listen in ssl mode” means pproxy needs the server certificate material for its TLS listener. The listener URL selects TLS; it does not supply a certificate.

pproxy -l http+ssl://127.0.0.1:8181 -r socks5://127.0.0.1:1080 --ssl proxy-chain.pem,proxy-key.pem

This illustrative command assumes pproxy, an upstream SOCKS5 service, and the certificate files already exist. The --ssl value is a certificate file followed by a comma and its matching private-key file. A combined file can use the single-file form.

Port 8181 is the local TLS-protected HTTP proxy listener. Port 1080 is the separate upstream SOCKS service. Configuring one does not create or validate the other.

Clients need an HTTPS proxy URL and trust for the listener certificate, including a matching proxy hostname or IP address. Destination TLS remains a separate connection inside the proxy route.
