Which Bash Startup File Set That Proxy?
Check login_shell first, then distinguish the selected profiles from inherited parent environment.
shopt login_shell| Launch | Startup inputs |
|---|---|
| Login | /etc/profile, then first readable existing ~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login or ~/.profile; it may source ~/.bashrc |
| Interactive non-login | ~/.bashrc; Debian-family builds also /etc/bash.bashrc |
| Noninteractive | BASH_ENV where applicable |
Inspect assignments and sourced scripts on that path for the actual proxy variable. Different terminal modes can therefore select different sources.
bash --noprofile --norc skips startup files but still inherits the parent environment. Removing a file assignment does not erase a value already held by the terminal or shell.
Correct the owning source and start with the intended parent environment. Another trailing unset can hide the source without fixing another launch path.
