For the implementation with separate proxy, user and password parameters:

import getpass
import nltk

proxy_user = input("Proxy username: ")
proxy_password = getpass.getpass("Proxy password: ")
nltk.set_proxy(
    "http://proxy.example.net:8080",
    user=proxy_user,
    password=proxy_password,
)
nltk.download("punkt")

Check the signature in the NLTK version the program uses before adapting older tuple or URL-login examples. The endpoint is the proxy rather than the NLTK data index, and punkt is an example resource to replace with the package needed by the application.

set_proxy installs a urllib opener with a proxy handler and, when given credentials, proxy authentication handlers. It does not configure Requests, HTTPX, arbitrary sockets or every subprocess.

Repeated authentication challenges require comparing the service's requested scheme with the available handlers. Supplying the right arguments does not add every enterprise authentication method.

If the transfer succeeds but NLTK cannot find the data, inspect its search paths and package layout as a separate local-data problem. A manual download can be a deliberate deployment choice; it does not establish that a calling signature is invalid or explain an unresolved proxy error. Keep credentials out of committed scripts and copied URLs.
