A command named yum does not identify which proxy configuration it reads. Legacy yum, DNF and DNF5 have different implementation details; first identify the installed package manager rather than copy an old distribution's configuration path.

For DNF, merge the proxy setting into the active main configuration:

[main]
proxy=http://proxy.example:8080

Keep the existing file and use a reachable endpoint; for permitted public-repository routes, select an HTTP candidate from the HTTP proxy list. A localhost proxy requires a suitable listener in that same network environment.

The DNF reference documents proxy_username, proxy_password and proxy_auth_method separately from repository credentials. A repository password cannot supply the intermediary account.

Repository sections can override the main proxy. If only one repository differs, inspect that section first; when the explicit proxy is unset, inspect applicable environment inputs too. Use the DNF5 reference for that generation rather than assume every earlier detail carries over.

Keep route failure separate from package selection. Changing the requested package, clearing all metadata or disabling signatures cannot make an unreachable listener respond. Establish the selected route and proxy authentication before acting on a later repository or package error.
